Arrondissements of Belgium

The NUTS code scheme was revised in 2003. The code for Brussels arrondissement changed from BE1 to BE100, and for Nivelles, from BE31 to BE310.

I have updated the populations to 2010 data.

Belgium is divided into provinces, which are subdivided into arrondissements. The table below shows all of the arrondissements of Belgium. Much of this information appeared in different form in "Administrative Subdivisions of Countries".

  • Flemish name, French name: In general contexts, use the Flemish name for
arrondissements in the Flemish Region (NUTS codes beginning with BE2),
the French name for arrondissements in Wallonia (NUTS BE3). In English,
you may prefer to use the English names Antwerp (for Antwerpen), Brussels
(for Brussel), and Ghent (for Gent).
  • HASC: Hierarchical administrative subdivision codes. The middle two letters
identify the province. For key, see "Administrative Subdivisions of Countries".
  • NUTS: Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (level 3). These are codes
developed by Eurostat in order to report European statistics on the basis of a
set of comparable regions. If the NUTS codes are truncated to two digits, they
become level-2 NUTS codes, which represent the province. Truncated to
one digit, they become level-1 NUTS codes, which represent the region. * Note:
Verviers has two NUTS codes: BE335 for communes and BE336 for the district.
  • INS: Codes assigned by the National Statistics Institute for the 1991 census.
  • Population: 2010-01-01, compiled from population registers.
  • Capitals: Arrondissements have the same names as their capitals.
Halle-Vilvoorde has two capitals, Halle and Vilvoorde.
