Departments of Mauritania

Nouakchott has been split into three regions. I have reflected that change by changing the middle segment of the HASC codes of the nine affected departments.

Mauritania is divided into thirteen wilayat (regions; Fr. régions). These are further subdivided into 55 moughataas (departments; Fr. départements) and 218 communes. The nine subdivisions of Nouakchott are both departments and communes, and are counted in both of those figures.

  • HASC: Hierarchical administrative subdivision codes.
The middle two letters identify the region. For key,
    see "Administrative Subdivisions of Countries".
  • Pop-2013: 2013-03-25 census.
  • Pop-1996: projected populations for 1996.
  • Pop-1988: 1988 census. The population of Nouakchott
district is combined in a single figure, listed under Arafat.

Change history:

  1. 1990-09-10: Nouakchott, previously divided into six arrondissements, reorganized into nine departments.
  2. 2010-02-24: N'Beiket Lehwach moughataa created. Its capital is a newly created town at the well of Nbeïket el Ahouâch (spelling according to the GEOnet Names Server). This well is very near the border between Bassikounou and Oualata in Hodh ech Chargui region, so I'm guessing N'Beiket Lehwach moughataa was formed from parts of each of them. Former HASC codes of Bassikounou and Oualata were MR.HC.BS and MR.HC.OL, respectively.
  3. 2013-05-06: Chami moughataa formed, probably split from Nouadhibou. Its capital is a newly created town at the well of Chami. The former HASC code of Nouadhibou was MR.DN.NO.
