In a referendum held on 2003-12-07, Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy voted overwhelmingly to become overseas collectivities under Article 74 of the French Constitution. The change took effect on 2007-07-15. Formerly, they had both been communes of Guadeloupe.

Saint Martin collectivity consists of the northern part of Saint Martin Island, all of Tintamarre Island, and other islets. Saint Martin Island is partitioned between Saint Martin and the Netherlands Antilles. (Dutch-speaking inhabitants call it Sint Maarten.)
