Districts of Tajikistan

Alfons Cuppens found 2014 population data for the districts and cities of Tajikistan, and prepared a helpful table, which I have used as the basis of the one below. His main source was [2] (see the Regions of Tajikistan page). It agrees, generally speaking, with the divisions shown on the clickable map at the President of Tajikistan's  page. This list shows Tajikistan divided into 58 districts and 17 cities.

Change history:

Serhii Tymofiiev (of Mapa Publishers, Kyiv, Ukraine) provided me with the names and populations of 62 raions, 14 cities, and two hukumats (city councils) of Tajikistan as of 2003. They are listed in the table below. He patched the table together from source [3], Internet archives of various Russian-language Tajik newspapers, and telephone books.

The 2014 table combines the four raions of Dushanbe region into a single entity, Dushanbe city. It also changes the status of the hukumats to cities. The only change in HASC codes is for Dushanbe. Note that some of the Russian names are phonetically similar to the Tajik names, but others, including Leninskij, Moskovskij, and Sovetskij, were replaced with names of local origin.

Other names of subdivisions:

  1. Aini: Ayní (variant)
  2. Hissor: Hisor (variant)
  3. Kairokkum: Qayroqqum (variant)
  4. Mir Said Ali Hamadoni: M. S. A. Khamadoní (variant)
  5. Rudaki: A. Rŭdakí (variant)
  6. Shahritus: Shahrtuz (variant)
