Municipalities of South Africa
South Africa is divided into 46 district municipalities and 6 metropolitan municipalities. Three of
the district municipalities lie partly in two provinces. I have assigned those three to the province
that seems to contain the most important part of them. That means that the HASC codes are not
strictly hierarchical in this case. There are areas belonging to ZA.NC.KG, for example,
that lie in ZA.NW at the primary subdivision level. Let me
know if this would cause a problem in your application.

The Municipal Demarcation Board has a
list 
of municipal name changes. Slightly different dates are given in other sources.
- 2000-09-29: In North-West, name of Central district municipality changed to Ngaka Modiri Molema.
- 2000-10-01: In Gauteng, name of Metsweding Cross Boundary district municipality changed to Metsweding; name of West Rand Cross Boundary district municipality changed to West Rand. In Limpopo, name of Sekhukhune Cross Boundary district municipality changed to Greater Sekhukhune.
- 2001-06-25: In Northern Cape, name of Kgalagadi Cross Boundary district municipality changed to Kgalagadi.
- 2005-05-03: In Free State, name of Northern Free State district municipality changed to Fezile Dabi.
- 2005-12-22: Under the 12th amendment to the constitution, Bohlabela district municipality split between Ehlanzeni and Mopani.
- 2006-02-27: In Eastern Cape, name of Nelson Mandela metropolitan municipality changed to Nelson Mandela Bay.
- 2008-03-12: In North-West, name of Southern district municipality changed to Dr Kenneth Kaunda.
- 2008-04-01: In North-West, name of Bophirima district municipality changed to Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati.
